Sierra Negra Volcano, located on Isabela Island, boasts one of the largest volcanic calderas in the world. The volcano is still active, with its most recent eruption occurring in 2018. The horseback riding tour provides a unique and eco-friendly way to explore the volcano and its surroundings, offering stunning views and an intimate experience with the island’s natural beauty.
Tour Highlights
- Scenic Ride: The tour typically starts in the town of Puerto Villamil. From there, participants ride through diverse landscapes, including lush highlands, endemic vegetation, and stark volcanic terrain.
- Caldera Viewpoint: The highlight of the tour is reaching the viewpoint overlooking the vast Sierra Negra caldera, which stretches about 7×9 kilometers in diameter.
- Volcan Chico: Many tours also include a hike of 6km to Volcan Chico, a smaller volcanic vent on the northeast side of Sierra Negra. This area features fascinating lava formations and provides panoramic views of Isabela Island and the surrounding ocean.
- Picnic in front of the Sierra Negra caldera: Enjoy a box lunch that includes a tuna sandwich, cookies, juice, fruit in front of the wonderful view of the volcano after the hike you will have a moment to relax and enjoy.
